For centuries, rice water, rice bran, and other rice-derived components have been essential in Korean skin care regimens. Even today, they remain popular, sharing the spotlight with ingredients such as centella, ginseng, and snail mucin. YesStyle’s bestselling items frequently feature rice-based skin care products.

Rice is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and various nutrients, providing numerous benefits for the skin. This grain is known for its brightening and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a perfect choice for acne-prone skin. This summer, I curated a six-step skin care routine combining both traditional and contemporary rice-infused products from beloved K-Beauty brands, including I’m from, THE FACE SHOP, and Beauty of Joseon. Continue reading to find out how my rice-centered skin care regimen performed during my one-month trial!

THE FACE SHOP is well-regarded for its commitment to natural ingredients and affordability. A top seller on YesStyle, the Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil is available in two variations: the rich version and the light version. The rich variant includes three additional ingredients (cetyl ethylhexanoate, candlenut seed oil, and canola oil) compared to the light version, providing a more nourishing cleanse. Both versions contain rice bran oil, rice extract, and soapwort extract for a gentle and nourishing cleanse.

My thoughts:

Since my skin is sensitive, I opted for the light version to avoid any potential irritation. Despite being labeled as the light variant, the cleansing oil was a bit thicker than I anticipated. The fragrance is mild, though I would prefer a fragrance-free option. It effectively melted away base and eye makeup, including mascara, without irritating my eyes. The emulsified makeup rinsed away easily with just a few splashes of water, and my skin felt hydrated after cleansing.

This vegan facial cleanser from I’m from’s Rice line was launched in June of this year and has quickly gained popularity. The formulation includes AHA, PHA, and LHA to purify pores. With niacinamide, 5% Korean rice extract, and rice bran extract, it gently brightens the skin and reduces redness. This pearlescent facial cleanser transforms into a creamy foam when lathered with water.

My thoughts:

The cleanser does a great job of removing oil and dirt without causing irritation. I appreciate that it is fragrance-free and does not leave my skin feeling tight after cleansing. Its pasty consistency prevents drips when dispensing the product. The Rice Whip Facial Cleanser comes in a sizable tube that should last about three months.

I’m from’s Rice Toner has been among YesStyle’s top three best-selling toners since 2020. With a viscous, milky texture achieved through a remarkable 77.8% goami rice extract, it assists in fading pigmentation and enhancing skin texture. It also contains rice bran extract, niacinamide, and purslane extract for brightening, nourishing, and moisturizing effects.

My thoughts:

When I first saw the Rice Toner’s opaque hue, I anticipated a texture similar to LANEIGE’s Cream Skin Cerapeptide Refiner; however, it is significantly thicker and richer. The toner imparts a subtle glow to the skin, making it perfect for those who desire a dewy and luminous appearance.

This toner has a distinct grainy scent. Although it does not contain added fragrances or alcohol, it caused a slight tingling sensation on my acne wounds, so I’ll avoid using it during breakouts. The toner is quite nourishing; in hot, humid weather, I could forgo moisturizer when using it — making it better suited for individuals with dry skin.

Recently introduced to Beauty of Joseon’s Rice Bran line this summer, the Glow Replenishing Rice Milk is a toner enriched with rice extract and amino acids to hydrate the skin, while kaolin powder absorbs excess sebum, promoting a refreshing sensation. This toner can also be utilized as a toner mask — simply soak cotton pads and leave them on your face for about ten minutes before removal.

My thoughts:

Despite the inclusion of “milk” in its name, this toner has a consistency similar to rice water. It’s a great option for summer, serving as an alternative to I’m from’s Rice Toner if you prefer a refreshing product while still reaping the benefits of rice for your skin. Like I’m from’s Rice Toner, the Glow Replenishing Rice Milk has a rice grain scent and separates into two layers (water and rice extract), so be sure to shake well before using.

This fast-absorbing emulsion, containing ceramide, rice bran oil, and shea butter, creates a moisturizing barrier on the skin without leaving a sticky or greasy sensation. It has a floral scent.

My thoughts:

One concern I have with this emulsion is its packaging — I wish it were in a pump bottle to avoid having to shake the product into my hand. Its lightweight texture makes it an ideal summer moisturizer. However, I’m not fond of its strong fragrance.

Launched two years ago, this mineral sunscreen offers SPF 50+ PA++++ protection and hydrates the skin with 41% goami rice extract rich in amino acids. This reef-friendly formula leaves behind a matte finish.

My thoughts:

As a mineral sunscreen that contains zinc oxide, the Rice Sunscreen has a slightly drying effect. It may leave a white cast if applied excessively, but it is lightweight enough for summer use. This sunscreen is perfect for those seeking sun protection combined with a subtle tone-up effect.

The Conclusion

This rice-centric skin care routine has helped diminish the less noticeable dark spots on my face while keeping my skin hydrated and calm. My pores became slightly refined, my skin texture improved, and my acne healed more quickly during the month-long trial. Ultimately, I’ve decided to incorporate THE FACE SHOP’s Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil, I’m from’s Rice Whip Facial Cleanser, and Beauty of Joseon’s Glow Replenishing Rice Milk into my regular skin care regimen.

As with all cosmetic products, make sure to conduct a skin patch test before starting this rice-based skin care routine, particularly if your skin is sensitive.
