Top Concern: Acne

Skin type: Mature, sensitive, acne-prone
Skin care nightmare: Breakouts
Skin goals: Clear and acne-free skin

The problem: Acne has been a persistent issue for me despite being in my 30s; it typically flares up around my chin monthly. Sleep deprivation also triggers breakouts on my forehead. My sensitive skin often becomes irritated, leading to widespread pimples. Acne complicates matters further with redness, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and scarring, while drying out my skin due to various treatments. During a breakout, I often resort to heavy makeup to cover pimples, but this can exacerbate the problem because products can irritate my skin, and if not cleansed thoroughly, they lead to additional skin issues. Makeup isn’t my favorite, so managing breakouts this way can be quite frustrating.

How I tackle the issue: I make sure to always have these acne-fighting products on hand:

1. Acne patches: These are great for drawing out pus and flattening pimples overnight. They also discourage me from picking at the area. I prefer Purito SEOUL’s acne patches because they’re gentle on my skin and don’t cause discomfort!

2. Retinoid + benzoyl peroxide: I use a mix of 0.1% adapalene (a retinoid) and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel as recommended by my dermatologist. These ingredients help clear my acne effectively. Rohto Mentholatum’s benzoyl peroxide gel works wonders on my skin, although it can cause stinging and dryness.

3. Rohto Mentholatum’s Acnes Powder Lotion: This has been my top choice for managing acne since my teens, particularly in summertime. Its oil-absorbing formula dries out blemishes and contains cica extract for soothing benefits.

Top Concern: A Compromised Skin Barrier

Skin type: Combination, sensitive, dehydrated
Skin care nightmare: Trying out new products that trigger allergic reactions
Skin goals: Stronger skin barrier

The problem: I experience chronic hives from allergies, which are triggered by heat and stress. This has damaged my skin barrier over time, leading to significant sensitivity and dehydration. Often, when I try new products, I end up with red, itchy skin due to allergic reactions. My compromised skin barrier means my skin feels taut and dry despite using moisturizers. During winter, maintaining hydration is particularly challenging. Meanwhile, my T-zone tends to get oily throughout the day, typical of combination skin.

How I tackle the issue: Using a thick moisturizer rich in occlusive ingredients is crucial for forming a protective barrier against environmental stressors. I rely on Real Barrier’s Extreme Cream, especially in winter, for dehydrated skin relief. Given my sensitive skin and compromised barrier, I avoid exfoliation to prevent irritation, which complicates managing excess oil in my T-zone. I found that Beauty of Joseon’s Ginseng Essence Water does a great job at controlling oil while also hydrating my skin. I keep a Collagen Vita Wrinkle Multi Balm handy to rehydrate dry spots on my cheeks.

Top Concern: Dark Circles

Skin type: Oily, acne-prone
Skin care nightmare: Accidentally popping a pimple
Skin goals: Overall brighter skin

The problem: After dedicating years to improving my skin, I’m pleased to have my acne under control, yet I’ve encountered a new issue: dark circles under my eyes, likely a result of genetics and lifestyle factors such as insufficient sleep. Although I use concealer, dark circles sometimes remain visible, making me appear fatigued. While getting adequate sleep is crucial, managing dark circles long-term has proven to be quite challenging. Nonetheless, I’m determined to combat this with the right eye cream.

How I tackle the issue: To introduce myself to the benefits of eye creams, I chose a gentle formula like Haruharu WONDER’s Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream, which is infused with fermented black rice extract and plant-derived retinol, enhancing my skin’s defense against free radicals and inflammation. The bakuchiol-rich eye cream also helps diminish hyperpigmentation, encourages skin cell turnover, and minimizes wrinkles. I’ve also incorporated Beauty of Joseon’s Revive Eye Serum into my routine, featuring ginseng root extract and retinol liposome to improve elasticity and deeply hydrate the under-eye area. To elevate my eye care, I’ve treated myself to MIZON’s tremendously nourishing Snail Repair Intensive Gold Eye Gel Patch!

Top Concern: Enlarged Pores

Skin type: Combination, sensitive, mature
Skin care nightmare: Noticeably enlarged pores
Skin goals: Smooth and soft skin

The problem: My greatest fear in skin care is having my pores appear so enlarged that makeup can’t effectively cover them. This concern is partly due to aging and my uneven approach to skin care in my 20s. Despite my regular double cleansing and exfoliation now, enlarged pores continue to be an ongoing issue. This is further complicated by my ultra-sensitive skin, which reacts negatively to actives from BHAs to retinol. It’s only after extensive trial and error that I’ve been able to create a gentle routine that minimizes the appearance of pores.

How I tackle the issue: There’s no method to actually reduce pore size, but effectively cleansing away dead skin, excess oil, and impurities can give the illusion of smaller pores. I favor cleansing foams with gentle exfoliants like pink Himalayan salt and papain, such as SKIN 1004’s Madagascar Centella Poremizing Deep Cleansing Foam, especially if they contain skin-calming ingredients like cica, heartleaf, or aloe. Another way to create a smoother appearance is by hydrating skin with an anti-aging serum or ampoule. While retinol works wonders for firming skin, it can lead to irritation for those with sensitive skin like mine. As an alternative, I’ve found bakuchiol-based products like MEDI-PEEL’s Bakuchiol Miracle Firming Ampoule to be effective. For emergencies, I enhance my base makeup with innisfree’s pore-blurring No-Sebum Blur Primer.

Top Concern: Eczema

Skin type: Dry, sensitive
Skin care nightmare: Painful eczema flare-ups
Skin goals: Deeply hydrated skin

The problem: I deal with eczema that flares up due to environmental triggers, such as dust and humidity changes. My skin is quick to lose moisture, prompting me to apply moisturizer frequently, particularly after showers or handwashing. I tend to avoid heavy makeup because my dry skin requires constant moisturizing throughout the day. I stick to minimalist skin care formulations that are gentle on my sensitive skin. Flare-ups happen occasionally, and I ensure that the affected areas stay clean, cool, and moisturized.

How I tackle the issue: Everything I apply on my skin needs to be gentle and made for sensitive skin. For cleansing, I find Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser works best as it’s fragrance-free and doesn’t strip moisture. CeraVe’s Moisturizing Cream is my top choice for hydration, soothing my dry skin effectively. Since I often need to reapply, I sometimes layer it with paraffin or petroleum-based ointments. If I encounter severely dry and cracked skin, I turn to creams with urea for excellent hydration and softness. I remain cautious with urea products, as some may sting open wounds.

Top Concern: Breakouts

Skin type: Combination, acne-prone
Skin care nightmare: Breakouts before significant events
Skin goals: Glowing skin

The problem: Hormonal imbalances have plagued me since my teenage years, leading to frequent breakouts. It took considerable trial and error to discover the right active ingredients for treating my acne, from salicylic acid to niacinamide and retinol. Eventually, I found that retinol was the most effective for me. However, years of experimenting have made my skin more prone to dryness and sensitivity. Thus, I now prioritize hydrating and calming products that can bolster my skin barrier, especially after flare-ups.

How I tackle the issue: I start my morning skin care routine with COSRX’s snail mucin essence to hydrate and smooth my skin, ensuring a flawless makeup application. I follow this up with Purito’s B5 Panthenol Re-Barrier Cream, loaded with centella extract, squalane, and niacinamide, providing a much-needed moisture boost and soothing effect. On nights when I apply retinol, I indulge in a hydrating face mask from Dr. Jart+ to combat dryness.
