Maureen
Prioritized Concern: Acne

Skin type: Mature, sensitive, prone to acne
Skin care frustration: Frequent breakouts
Skin aspirations: Clear, acne-free complexion

The challenge: I’ve struggled with acne for years; even in my 30s, this issue persists regularly. Breakouts typically occur around my chin during my menstrual cycle, while my forehead is prone to outbreaks when I’m fatigued. Being sensitive, my skin often becomes irritated, leading to widespread pimples. Across these struggles, I face associated problems like redness, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and acne scars, along with dryness from harsh acne treatments. When breakouts occur, I tend to cover them with makeup, but this can sometimes exacerbate the irritation, especially if I don’t thoroughly cleanse. I’m not a fan of heavy makeup, so these efforts can be quite trying.

My approach to handle the problem: I always keep a stock of these effective products to manage my troubled skin:

1. Acne patches: They work wonders to extract pus and flatten pimples overnight. These patches also stop me from touching the area. I prefer Purito SEOUL’s acne patches during breakouts as they don’t irritate my skin!

2. Retinoid + benzoyl peroxide: As recommended by my dermatologist, I use a 0.1% adapalene and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel to tackle acne overnight. Rohto Mentholatum’s potent benzoyl peroxide gel effectively calms my troubled skin but can cause stinging and dryness.

3. Rohto Mentholatum’s Acnes Powder Lotion: This lotion, rich in sebum-absorbing properties, has been my go-to for summer breakouts since my teenage years. It helps to remove excess oil and dry out blemishes while soothing my skin with cica extract.

Prioritized Concern: Compromised Skin Barrier

Skin type: Combination, sensitive, dehydrated
Skin care challenge: Reactions from trying new products
Skin goals: Stronger skin

The challenge: My allergies cause chronic hives that are easily triggered by heat and stress, which have progressively damaged my skin barrier, making it sensitive and dehydrated. Whenever I excitedly try a new product, I often end up with red, itchy, and swollen skin due to allergic reactions. My compromised barrier also leads to dehydrated skin that feels tight and dry even post-moisturizing. Winter is particularly challenging for maintaining hydration despite my multi-step regimen, while my T-zone can be quite oily throughout the day.

My approach to handle the problem: A rich moisturizer with occlusive agents is vital in my daily routine to shield against external aggressors. I rely on the Extreme Cream from Real Barrier to soothe my dehydrated skin, especially during winter. Given my delicate barrier and sensitive skin, I sidestep exfoliation to avoid irritation, which can complicate my oily T-zone challenges. I’ve found effectiveness in Beauty of Joseon’s Ginseng Essence Water for controlling excess oil while providing nourishment. To combat dryness, I always have a Collagen Vita Wrinkle Multi Balm handy for emergency moisture bursts.

Prioritized Concern: Dark Circles

Skin type: Oily, prone to acne
Skin care nightmare: Popping a pimple unwittingly
Skin aspirations: Brighter overall complexion

The challenge: After diligently working on my skin for years, I’m excited to have my acne-prone skin under control. However, a new challenge has surfaced: dark circles under my eyes, likely caused by a mix of genetics and lifestyle factors like sleep deprivation. While I rely on concealer, the dark circles sometimes remain visible, making me appear tired. I’ve realized that sufficient sleep significantly helps, but finding ways to minimize these circles long-term isn’t straightforward. Nevertheless, I’m committed to improving my situation with the right eye cream.

My approach to handle the problem: To start my journey into eye creams, I chose a gentle formula like Haruharu WONDER’s Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream. This nourishing cream contains fermented black rice extract and plant-based retinol that helps combat free radicals and inflammation. It’s also effective at fading hyperpigmentation, boosting cell turnover, and preventing wrinkles. Additionally, I’ve introduced Beauty of Joseon’s Revive Eye Serum, infused with ginseng root extract and retinol liposome for enhanced elasticity and deep hydration in the under-eye area. For an indulgent touch, I couldn’t resist adding MIZON’s rich Snail Repair Intensive Gold Eye Gel Patch!

Prioritized Concern: Enlarged Pores

Skin type: Combination, sensitive, mature
Skin care frustration: Prominent pores
Skin aspirations: Smooth, soft skin

The challenge: My ongoing skin care nightmare revolves around the visibility of my pores—if they become too apparent, no amount of foundation can cover them. I attribute this partly to aging, as my skin loses elasticity, but I suspect my inconsistent skincare routine in my 20s didn’t help. Even with diligent double-cleansing and exfoliation, enlarged pores remain a concern. Coupled with my hypersensitive skin, which reacts negatively to many products from BHAs to retinol, the journey to establish a pore-minimizing routine has been trial and error.

My approach to handle the problem: While it’s impossible to shrink pores, maintaining them by clearing away dead skin cells, excess oil, and impurities can make them appear smaller. I find cleansers with gentle exfoliating ingredients such as pink Himalayan salt and papain effective, like SKIN 1004’s Madagascar Centella Poremizing Deep Cleansing Foam, particularly those enriched with soothing botanicals like cica or aloe. Enhancing skin plumpness can create the illusion of smaller pores; retinol products are known for their firming benefits, but my sensitive skin can react poorly. Thankfully, I’ve found bakuchiol-based alternatives like MEDI-PEEL’s Bakuchiol Miracle Firming Ampoule effective. For quick fixes, using innisfree’s pore-blurring No-Sebum Blur Primer works wonders in my makeup routine.

Prioritized Concern: Eczema

Skin type: Dry, sensitive
Skin care nightmare: Painful eczema flare-ups
Skin goals: Well-hydrated skin

The challenge: I deal with eczema triggered by various environmental factors such as dust mites and humidity changes. My skin loses moisture rapidly, prompting me to moisturize multiple times throughout the day, especially post-shower and hand-wash. I shy away from heavy makeup, needing to reapply my moisturizer frequently due to my dry condition. Sticking to minimalist products that won’t irritate my sensitive skin is key. Flare-ups occur occasionally, necessitating keeping the affected areas clean, cool, and well-moisturized.

My approach to handle the problem: I only use products that are gentle and suitable for sensitive skin. Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser works wonders for me as it’s fragrance-free and maintains my skin’s moisture. Cerave’s Moisturizing Cream is a staple in my routine, providing comfort for dry skin. Given how often I need to reapply, I sometimes layer it with paraffin or petroleum-based ointments. For severely dry, cracked skin, I rely on creams containing urea, which effectively hydrates and softens my skin, although I must be cautious, as some can irritate open wounds.

Prioritized Concern: Breakouts

Skin type: Combination, prone to acne
Skin care nightmare: Acne flare-ups before important events
Skin goals: Radiant complexion

The challenge: Hormonal imbalances have plagued me since my teenage years, leading to perpetual acne breakouts. I’ve faced numerous trials trying to identify the right actives to address my acne, ranging from salicylic acid to niacinamide to retinol. Eventually, I discovered that retinol was the most effective for me. However, the years spent experimenting left my skin prone to dryness and sensitivity; thus, I now prioritize using hydrating and soothing products that fortify my skin barrier—especially post-flare-ups.

My approach to handle the problem: I start my mornings with COSRX’s snail mucin essence, which hydrates and smooths my skin for a more flawless makeup application. To ensure I wake up with soft, supple skin, I apply Purito’s B5 Panthenol Re-Barrier Cream, loaded with centella extract, squalane, and niacinamide, providing much-needed moisture and soothing effects. On nights when I use retinol, I enjoy a hydrating mask from Dr. Jart+ to combat dryness.
