NewJeans is back with a splash, releasing two vibrant summer tracks for 2024. The five-member K-pop girl group has launched their inaugural Japanese EP Supernatural, with music videos for the singles Right Now and Supernatural premiering on June 16 and June 21, respectively. Both songs creatively blend English, Japanese, and Korean lyrics while incorporating Japanese cultural elements, thanks to collaborations with contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami for Right Now and influences from the Japanese city pop genre in Supernatural.

Renowned for their retro-inspired aesthetics, NewJeans continues to draw from 90s and early 2000s pop culture for the creative direction of Supernatural. Keep reading to emulate NewJeans’s nostalgic style!

Right Now

In a whimsical blend of real-life scenarios and 2D animated experiences, the music video for Right Now features the return of NewJeans’s PowerPuff Girl personas, first introduced in last year’s New Jeans MV. This time, the video captures the girls’ anxious discussions over Hanni’s unanswered messages to a crush before diving into a fantastical 2D world where they search for a love potion amidst a vibrant, flower-filled setting, designed by Takashi Murakami. Each member sports Murakami-inspired characters with brightly colored, anime-style eyes, and their real-life outfits, infused with retro elements, harmonize beautifully with the aesthetics of the video.

Hanni wears a playful summer outfit featuring a pastel blue and yellow baby tee paired with frayed light blue denim shorts. Her look is full of vibrant colors: her red hair is accented with a bright red hair clip, and her light blue faux nails are adorned with 3D designs. She completes her ensemble with casual pink flats.

Danielle radiates sunny vibes with her cheerful yellow ensemble. Her curly blonde hair is the perfect frame for a bright yellow off-shoulder top layered over a flared lace minidress. She completes the sporty chic look with black yoga shorts underneath and strappy red and pink ballet flats.

Minji opts for a Y2K-inspired silhouette, featuring a blue gingham dress layered over bootcut jeans. She completes the look with a white lace-hemmed camisole underneath and a colorful beaded drop necklace for a hint of whimsy.

Supernatural

The track Supernatural draws inspiration from the new jack swing and Japanese city pop genres, characterized by its funky electronic bassline, dynamic rhythm, and retro embellishments. The music video opens and closes with scenes in an old-school 4:3 TV aspect ratio to set the mood, featuring urban nightlife that captures the essence of city pop. In the Supernatural Part 1 MV, NewJeans’s fashion channels a Y2K boy band vibe, showcasing baggy, hip-hop-inspired attire reminiscent of The Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.

To emulate NewJeans’s squad aesthetic, consider fully coordinated white outfits like those featured in the MV during the dance break. Choose matching printed white T-shirts paired with baggy cargo pants. Add white windbreaker jackets but personalize how each member styles it: some could throw it over their T-shirt, others could tie it around their waist or drape it over their shoulders. Complete the look with white headbands and black sneakers for a polished finish.

The members also showcase diverse looks throughout the MV, providing a wealth of Y2K street-style outfit inspiration.
